Free Agent Season

Victor Martinez signed with the Tigers today. He is the first big free agent to sign this winter. The Red Sox made an effort to keep him but as with all Red Sox negotiations they had a contract they would extend to and not beyond.

The reasoning makes sense. Martinez might not be an everyday catcher and when one puts his numbers in the DH or 1B slot his offensive numbers are much more average and perhaps not worth 12 million a year.

The Sox have Jarrod S as we will call him as a prospect once highly thought of and can get a veteran to split duty with him.

Sometimes the best move is one not made and I have no objection to the Red Sox decision in this case.

Celtics defeat Heat ( again)

So last night the Celtics went into Miami and defeated the Heat for the second time in this short season. Does this mean the Heat will not win the championship. No it does not. It does mean, however, that they cannot be favored at this point.

It will take time for them to learn how to share, it is still undetermined if the egos of Wade and James can coexist. Can Lebron contribute while the offense is isolating for Wade and vice versa.

I read an amazing stat yesterday, in the first 8 games Lebron had two, that is 2, offensive rebounds. How does that happen. It is almost as if you are avoiding the ball for that to happen.

Chris Bosh is a fine player and will be a fine asset but calling him a third member of that trio is like saying that Dwight Evans was right there with Lynn and Rice in 75. Later he did prove to be and perhaps Bosh will but at this point he is not. He was a good player on a bad team and now he is a good player on a team that is supposed to be great. It is not the same and will not be judged the same and if this team does not win the blame will float to him because to blame LeBron would admit a huge mistake.

It will be interesting to watch and surely most fans are rooting against them. LeBron has set himself into a position where he will fail if he does not win it all. That is a very hard place to be.

Giants Win

So as I had hoped the Giants won and Tim the freak led the way. As a Red Sox fan seeing Edgar Renteria be the MVP was a bit hard to swallow but still this series was good for baseball.

Baseball needs the Yankees as the team for many markets to root against but it needs the Yankees to lose to the underdog sometime as well.

Will the Giants finish tonight

With his reputation preceding him, playing at home, with the spotlight on and free agency pending one would have to think Cliff Lee will pitch the Rangers back to Game Six in San Fransisco tonight. Still as I look forward to the game I have to say I hope San Fransisco finishes.

Why? Simply put I think it would be good for baseball for Tim Linscuem SIC to be the best pitcher in the series. Going forward Lee will have his millions but Tim the Freak could be a great front line baseball figure.

His velocity dipped this year. One hopes that he does not with his small frame suffer the shortened career arc once feared for him.

The rest of the Giants as I have wrote before are veterans such as Huff, Uribe, Renteria, Sanchez, and Pat Burrell and super Rookie Buster Posey are a team that does not look like a World Series winner but at times when the moon is right that is not a disqualifier from winning.

This would appear to be the case this year.

Go Giants
